Advent!

This week in class we have been learning about Advent and what it means. We now know that Advent is a time of waiting, hoping believing. We know that it is the time leading up to Christmas time and the birth of Jesus. We have each made a Santa Advent Calendar. Each day we cover a number with a cotton wool ball so at the end of Advent he will have a full beard of cotton wool. We have also made and Advent Wreath. We all traced around our hands on green paper and then cut them out to stick together to form a wreath. We are enjoying learning about Advent and the time leading up to Christmas. We hope you like our pictures!

The Dental Nurse Visit

Yesterday the 4th of December, we had a guest speaker come to our school to talk to Grades 1/2 PW, KN and MB. Our visitor was named Di who is a Dental Nurse. She spoke to us about how to keep our teeth clean and healthy as well as how to brush properly. Di also told us about how much sugar was in different drinks. We compared soft-drinks, juices and different types of milk. We found out that Coke had 17 teaspoons of sugar, Orange Juice had around 14 teaspoons and Chocolate milk had 14.5 teaspoons. We found out that Fanta has the most sugar in it, with it containing 19 teaspoons of sugar per drink. At the end we all were given show bags that had things in it to help us take care of our teeth. We really enjoyed having Di come and speak to us and we all learnt lots of new things!!!!!

How often do you brush your teeth?

What is your favourite type of toothpaste?

How do you take care of your teeth?

Our Food Fun Day!

Last Tuesday the 18th of November, the whole of Grade 1/2 had a fun day at school. Our Fun Day was a fundraiser for Assist a Student and we all got to dress in casual clothes and brought in a gold coin donation. The cooking part of the day was to continue with our Inquiry topic “What’s Cooking?” In groups we made: fruit and marshmallow skewers, fairy bread, popcorn, cinnamon and sugar toast, Orange juice and Smiley face biscuits. We were very lucky that Lily had a popcorn maker at home and she was able to bring it in for us. Just before lunch, the whole of Grade 1/2 had a picnic out the front of the school on the green grassed area. The picnic was so much fun and the food was DELICIOUS!!!!!! We also got to watch a movie about food called Over The Hedge and then watched an episode of Junior Master Chef. We had such an awesome day making our food and have learnt lots about healthy eating as well as procedures and recipes.

What was your favourite food that we made?

Do you like cooking at home?

What is your favourite food to cook at home?

Vegemite Sandwiches!

Yesterday, the 6th of November, we made Vegemite sandwiches for our Inquiry topic called “What’s Cooking?” We have been looking at procedure writing and found out that recipes are a type of procedure. We had lots of bread to make sandwiches, plates of margarine and vegemite on each table and we all took turns making them. When we had made our sandwiches we were allowed to either eat it or take it home. Mr Newell had one too! Once we had finished eating them we looked at writing up the recipe. We found out that a recipe has steps and ingredients. We really enjoyed making our sandwiches and thought it was funny that Mr Newell was eating one!!! If you would like to practice your procedure writing you can have a go at writing up a recipe at home!

Do you have a favourite recipe?

What recipes have you followed at home?

Healthy Food Pyramid!

This term, our Inquiry topic is called “What’s Cooking?”. We have recently been learning about healthy food and healthy eating. Last week we started to learn about the Healthy Food Pyramid. The Healthy Food Pyramid helps us to know how many servings to have of the different foods that we eat. The pyramid had 6 parts. The sections are Grains and Cereals, Fruit, Vegetables, Dairy, Meat/Protein and Sweets. We all chose a type of food to draw and then cut out. Our pieces of food were then put into the different sections of the food pyramid. We know that it is important to eat healthy and only have bad foods sometimes. We love learning about different foods and can’t wait to start cooking!

What have you learned about the Healthy Food Pyramid?

Which section does your favourite food fit into?

Better Buddies – Negotiation

Today, the 24th of October, we did an activity as a class for Better Buddies. First of all we chose our groups, but they had to be people that we don’t normally work with. We had to choose an activity and negotiate as a group which order we played each game. Once we negotiated which order, we then played games, did arts and crafts as well as dances together. It was important for us to agree and play together nicely as well as sort out any problems ourselves. We all had to make compromises and get along together. We really enjoyed working with someone different and have learnt a lot about how to play nicely in the playground.

How can you and your friends negotiate?

Our Excursion to Forest Hill Chase!

On Tuesday the 14th of October all of Grade 1/2 went on a walking excursion to Forest Hill Chase. 1/2 KN and 1/2 MB walked together in a big group after recess. We went into a shop called Colonial Fruit. Mrs Mutimer explained some important rules to all of the children before we went in. We split up into 3 groups and took turns walking in and looking through the shop, looking at all of the beautiful fruit and vegetables. We picked a fruit or vegetable that we didn’t know much about, so we could learn more about it. We all had $5 to spend each. Lachie bought a Rockmellon (Cantaloupe), Thomas bought a Ruby Grapefruit and Olivia F bought a Passionfruit! We started walking out of the shopping centre and started our long walk back to school. When we got back we were all EXHAUSTED! We were happy with what we bought but our arms were sore from carrying it back!!!!! We had a great time and can’t wait to learn all about our fruit and vegetables.

What did you enjoy most about our excursion?

What sort of recipes can you make from your fruit or vegetable?

We drew lots of different types of food and then labelled them. Then we presented our posters to the class. We can’t wait to learn all about our new topic!

Sea Snakes in Jelly!

Yesterday we decided to make jelly, but not just any sort of jelly. We made a cup of jelly with lolly snakes in them! We made the jelly first by using boxes of jelly crystals and mixing them with boiling water in a big jug. Mr Newell mixed it up because it wasn’t safe for kids to be near boiling water. We then added some cold water and mixed it in. We poured it into plastic cups that had our names on them. In these cups we had put in a lolly snake. The jelly mixture that we made was blue to look like the ocean! We chose to use lolly snakes because they looked like Sea Snakes. Once all of the mixture was poured into the cups we placed them in the fridge over night. Then today…………….WE GOT TO EAT THE JELLY AT RECESS!!!!!!!!! It tasted really yummy and we wish we could have had more!

Have you ever made jelly before?

Have you ever made jelly like ours?

What was your favourite part of making jelly?

Super Sea Horses!

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, we decided to make Sea Horses! Mr Newell printed off a template and we cut it out. We created patterns using fine-liners and then coloured them in with Zooms. Afterwards we painted over the top of them with watercolour paints. We think they look super!

What do you think of our Sea Horses? Do you know any facts about Sea Horses?
